In a significant step towards enhancing the dairy sector, nineteen farmers have been provided with dairy stock as part of the first phase of a government initiative aimed at expanding Guyana’s dairy industry. Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha announced the initiative, emphasizing the administration’s commitment to integrating livestock production systems to increase output and sustainability.

During a recent address, Mustapha highlighted the advancements made in the livestock sector over the past five years and cautioned farmers against a narrow focus, urging them to adopt integrated systems for production.
“We have invested over $110 million to facilitate approximately 300 embryo transplants, which aim to elevate dairy production and improve the genetics of livestock across the nation,” he stated.
In a push for modernization, Mustapha revealed that Demerara Distillers Limited is collaborating with an international company to establish a state-of-the-art dairy processing plant in Moblissa, which is reported to be about 90 percent complete.
“When we provide these animals and you continue breeding through the embryo transplant program, you will be able to produce additional heifers for dairy production,” Mustapha added.
As part of this initiative, farmers also received soilage to promote better feeding systems, thereby supporting sustainable production practices. This comprehensive approach aims to not only enhance dairy output but also ensure the long-term viability of the industry in Guyana.
