Businessman Granted Bail After Arrest for Possession of Illegal Firearms

News

Amar Persaud, a 37-year-old businessman from Bladen Hall, East Coast Demerara, was granted bail of $500,000 this morning after facing charges related to the possession of illegal and unlicensed firearms.

Persaud was arrested by the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) last weekend on Sheriff Street in Georgetown, where he was found in possession of an unlicensed AK-47 high-powered weapon and an unlicensed Taurus pistol. Although he produced a license for a third firearm found in his vehicle, authorities suspect he was attempting to sell the illegal weapons.

During his court appearance before Magistrate Faith McGusty, the charges of illegal firearm possession were read to Persaud, to which he pleaded not guilty. Following the court proceedings, he was granted bail and is scheduled to return to court on January 21, 2026, for further hearings.

The investigation into the circumstances surrounding his arrest continues as authorities work to address the issue of illegal firearms in the region.
