Sanjay Peters, a 29-year-old resident of Williamsburg, Corentyne, has been sentenced to 23 years in prison for the sexual assault of a five-year-old boy.

Peters was found guilty of committing the offenses on two occasions—July 1 and August 5, 2018—in the Berbice area. The conviction followed a trial held in December 2025 at the Berbice High Court, presided over by Justice Sandil Kissoon. A jury of twelve deliberated and confirmed Peters’ guilt on both counts of sexual assault.
During the sentencing hearing, Senior Social Services Officer Judith Fulton presented a probation report, indicating that community members expressed significant distrust of Peters, particularly regarding the safety of children. At the time of the offenses, Peters was engaged in a four-year common-law relationship.
Justice Kissoon emphasized the severity of Peters’ crimes, stating that abuse of trust and violence against minors will not be tolerated in society. The judge noted the absence of any mitigating factors and remarked on Peters’ continued denial of the charges. Justice Kissoon further declared that Peters is not fit to reintegrate into society.
The court ordered that Peters must participate in rehabilitation programs while incarcerated. Presenting the case for the state was prosecutor Cicela Corbin, while Peters was represented by Attorney-at-Law Kevin Morgan.
This ruling underscores the judicial system’s commitment to protecting vulnerable individuals and sending a clear message against offenses involving sexual violence.
