Three-Month Amnesty for Motorists to Comply with New Tint Regulations

News

The Ministry of Home Affairs has announced a three-month amnesty period for motorists to adhere to the newly enacted Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic (Tint) Regulations 2026. Officially gazetted on January 1, 2026, the new tint law aims to regulate window tinting on vehicles across the country.

During the amnesty period, which runs until April 1, 2026, drivers can modify their vehicle tints without incurring penalties. After this date, strict enforcement of the regulations will commence, with non-compliance resulting in fines and other penalties under the law. Specifically, drivers found operating a vehicle with tint darker than allowed will face a $30,000 fine. Similar penalties will apply to individuals applying tints that exceed permitted levels.

Key regulations include:

No tint is allowed on the front windscreen, except for a visor. The visor must not exceed six inches from the top of the windscreen if it is less than three feet in height, or ten inches if the windscreen is three feet or taller.

Front side windows may have tint with a minimum visible light transmission (VLT) of 25%.

Rear side windows and the rear windscreen may have tint with a minimum VLT of 20%.

Certain exemptions are available under the new rules for individuals in specific roles, including the President, Prime Minister, ambulance services, and vehicles owned or used by law enforcement agencies, among others. Diplomats, senior government officials, and those with certified medical conditions may also qualify for exemptions but must apply for an official exemption certificate from the Ministry of Home Affairs.

To ensure compliance, the police will conduct tint inspections using calibrated meters provided by the Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS). Readings from these meters will be admissible in court proceedings, further reinforcing the seriousness of the regulations.

As the implementation date approaches, the Ministry encourages all motorists to take advantage of the amnesty period to avoid fines and ensure adherence to the new regulations.
