Minister Juan Edghill Calls for Removal of Derelict Vehicles in Georgetown

Minister of Public Works, Juan Edghill, has urged for the immediate removal of derelict vehicles, containers, and debris from public spaces across Georgetown. This initiative aims to enhance cleanliness and safety in the city.

During his recent tour of locations along the Railway Embankment Road and various communities, Edghill noted that his ministry is collaborating with the Guyana Police Force to tackle the issue effectively. “Parapets do not belong to individuals and businesses. This is an eyesore, a hive for criminal activity, and a total disrespect to other residents in the neighborhood,” he asserted.

The minister expressed concern that the presence of dilapidated vehicles poses risks to others utilizing the roadways. He emphasized that owners of these vehicles, along with those responsible for leaving sand and debris, had received notices, and in some cases, items had been cleared multiple times to no avail.

“We cannot afford to keep clearing this debris only for it to return the next day or week. It’s a waste of taxpayers’ money,” Edghill stated, warning that impounding of vehicles will commence if necessary.

Particular attention was drawn to abandoned vehicles occupying recreational tarmacs built for community improvement. At the intersection of Sandy Bab and Middleton Streets, the minister noted that these spaces, intended for leisure, are being misused.

“The lawlessness has been ongoing for too long, and while people ask for time, today is a turning point. We are not going to allow this to continue,” he declared.

Minister Edghill pledged that the ministry would ensure the affected areas are cleaned following the removal of the vehicles, reinforcing a commitment to restoring order and cleanliness in Georgetown.
