Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Vidhya Persaud, emphasized the importance of treating all claims of sexual harassment with the utmost seriousness during an invited comment at Parliament on Monday night.

Her remarks came in response to rising concerns regarding cases of sexual exploitation and harassment, particularly following reports and videos alleging such practices at the Guyana Police Force Academy. The Ministry of Home Affairs has initiated an investigation into these claims.

Minister Persaud expressed confidence in the abilities of the Minister of Home Affairs to tackle this pressing issue. “I have no doubt that she will do the necessary investigations to ensure that, whatever the incident or issue at hand, justice will be served. Those responsible for any cases or instances of sexual misconduct will be held accountable,” Persaud stated in an interview with BIG Smith News Watch.

The minister highlighted the government’s commitment to addressing sexual offenses, noting the development of a draft sexual harassment bill as a clear indication of their intentions. “There is seriousness in our intention as a government to deal with all of these cases, and we treat each case with the seriousness that it deserves,” she added.

As investigations proceed, the government reiterates its commitment to ensuring accountability and justice in matters of sexual misconduct. The public and relevant stakeholders await further updates on the situation at the Police Academy.
