The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) is poised to significantly bolster its air and maritime capabilities this year as part of a strategic initiative to modernize and strengthen its military operations. Chief of Defence Staff Brigadier Omar Khan made this announcement during the opening of the GDF’s Annual Officers’ Conference on Thursday.
Brigadier Khan revealed that the GDF will be receiving two new fixed-wing aircraft within the next quarter. This addition will enhance the Force’s air fleet, improving its capacity for surveillance, transportation, and rapid response operations.

On the maritime front, the GDF is set to complete a 600-foot wharf at the Coast Guard base in Ruimveldt, Georgetown, this year. This new facility will be designed to accommodate the GDF’s largest ocean-going patrol vessel, which is scheduled to arrive in the third quarter of 2026. The €39.5 million offshore patrol vessel is being procured from France and is expected to significantly enhance the country’s offshore patrol and maritime security capabilities.
Furthermore, Brigadier Khan announced that the GDF is currently conducting trials for newly constructed tactical river boats, which are anticipated to arrive by the end of the month. These vessels will improve the GDF’s operational effectiveness along Guyana’s waterways.
In addition to these advancements, the Defence Force is expanding its drone operations to better support troops regardless of their deployment locations, with the ongoing acquisition of other strategic assets.
Brigadier Khan emphasized that the vision behind these developments is to “build, deploy, and operate a modern, smart, and resilient” military force capable of effectively supporting national security and development while preparing for both current and future challenges. The announcements mark a significant step forward in the GDF’s commitment to enhancing its operational readiness and capabilities.
