Mahindra Moniram, also known as “Rovin,” a 23-year-old labourer from Onderneeming Sand Pit, has been charged with robbery under arms, contrary to Section 164 of the Criminal Law (Offences) Act, Chapter 8:01. This charge stems from an alleged incident involving Fownda Callender on July 1, 2024. Moniram appeared via Zoom from Lusignan Prison on Friday, where the charge was read to him. As the matter is indictable, he was not required to plead. The prosecutor applied the Administration of Justice Act (AJA), to which Moniram pleaded not guilty. The prosecution objected to bail, and he was remanded to prison. The case has been adjourned to February 26 for disclosure of statements.

Kevin Chattergoon, a 24-year-old fisherman from Paradise, faced charges of malicious damage to property, contrary to Section 160 of the Criminal Law (Offences) Act, Chapter 8:01. The alleged offence occurred on Monday at Paradise. Chattergoon appeared before Magistrate Ravindra Mohabir on Thursday and pleaded guilty. He was subsequently sentenced to two years’ imprisonment.

Keshwa Nauth, a 26-year-old labourer from Lot 28 Bush Lot, was arrested on February 3 and charged with assault, contrary to Section Two of the Summary Jurisdiction (Offences) Act, Chapter 8:02. The assault allegedly took place on the same day at Bush Lot, Essequibo Coast. Nauth appeared before Magistrate Ragubir on Friday, where he pleaded guilty and received a sentence of six months’ imprisonment.

These cases highlight the ongoing efforts by law enforcement and the judiciary to address criminal activities within the Essequibo Coast region.
