In a Statement Via Social Media WIN wrote : Following more than eight hours of detention, the Special Organized Crime Unit (SOCU) has released five individuals, including two elderly persons, who were taken to SOCU Headquarters for questioning in what has been described as an unfounded “sting operation.”

These individuals were released on their own recognizance, meaning no bail or monetary payment was required. Following the extensive questioning and a significant expenditure of taxpayer dollars during today’s operation, SOCU confirmed that no unlawful activities were uncovered. They indicated that a determination regarding one of the individuals will be made on February 13.
SOCU has also verified that the firearms in question were legally registered and licensed, and they have been returned to their respective owners. Additionally, any seized mobile phones were similarly returned.
Regrettably, videos are now being disseminated by propagandists aligned with the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), attempting to portray a dramatic narrative involving a few thousand Guyanese dollars in an effort to generate unnecessary public spectacle over trivial matters.
One of the individuals detained and subsequently released, Safraaz, is well-known to President Irfaan Ali through his work with the Mohameds, serving as an emissary to both the president and other senior government officials.
What transpired today is a continuation of political persecution and targeted harassment. SOCU’s own findings affirm that no narcotics, gold, or other precious metals, large sums of currency, or illegal firearms were involved in this operation.
This exemplifies the ongoing targeting and political persecution under the PPP, all at the expense of taxpayers. We stand resolute in our commitment to bringing attention to these injustices.
