Georgetown is grappling with significant flooding after several hours of rain overwhelmed the city’s drainage systems. Authorities are actively working to control the situation as water levels continue to rise.

The heavy downpour began early Thursday morning, quickly causing drain systems to strain. Major streets across the capital became impassable, severely affecting commuters heading to work and school. Many businesses in flood-affected areas placed pallets and barriers at their entrances to mitigate water entry.

The flooding resulted from sustained rainfall that impeded natural water runoff into drainage canals and outfalls. The Hydrometeorological Service issued a flood advisory, noting that moderate to deep convective clouds were generating heavy showers in the region. “These conditions are expected to continue for approximately the next two hours, potentially exacerbating flooding in low-lying areas,” the advisory stated. Furthermore, visibility decreased to less than five kilometers in many parts due to the heavy rainfall.

Rasheed Kellman, the engineer overseeing Georgetown’s drainage network, assured the public that the city’s pumps were operational and aiding in the removal of excess water. “We are putting together a plan in case we have any future events, but our team is always on standby for any emergencies, like blockages,” Kellman said.

He expects that water levels will subside by 4:00 PM. Kellman noted that Georgetown’s coastal, below-sea-level topography makes the city particularly susceptible to flooding during intense rainfall.

As the situation develops, authorities urge residents to exercise caution and stay updated on weather advisories.
