Ministry Launches Initiative to Combat Truancy at City Bus Parks

The initiative, named “Street Light Activity,” commenced on Monday and involves joint patrols at major transportation hubs, including the East/West, South, Lamaha, and Kitty routes. The initial sweep was led by officers from the Stabroek Police Outpost working alongside CPA district teams and Director Levine Gouveia.

During the first operation, 30 students were caught skipping school at various bus parks. The ministry reported that officers engaged with the students to confirm their school attendance and to understand the circumstances that led them to be at the bus parks during instructional hours. “The importance of consistent school participation as a critical foundation for their development and future success was reinforced,” the ministry stated in its release.

The Street Light Activity will continue daily, as part of the agency’s ongoing commitment to safeguard children, promote regular school attendance, and enhance inter-agency collaboration geared towards protecting the youth of the nation. The initiative underscores the government’s effort to address truancy and ensure that students receive the education they need for a successful future.
