A 31-year-old electrician, Adwan Kanhai, has been remanded to prison after facing charges of assaulting his sister and using abusive and threatening language towards her and their mother during an incident in Georgetown.

Kanhai appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts, where he pleaded not guilty to all charges. The allegations date back to Saturday, December 13, 2025, involving an incident at Lot 62 Durban Street Lodge.
The charges state that Kanhai assaulted his sister, Aria Richmond, and directed threatening language towards her. Additionally, he is accused of using abusive language towards their mother, Arita Griffith, at the same location on the same day.
The prosecution revealed that Kanhai resides in the same yard as Richmond, living in a building at the back of the property. Reports indicated that on the day of the incident, Kanhai was behaving disorderly outside the home. When Richmond confronted him about his aggressive behavior, he allegedly ignored her and continued acting erratically.
The prosecution noted that Kanhai had been drinking and smoking at the time, which may have contributed to his behavior. When Richmond attempted to ward him off by throwing water on him, Kanhai reportedly responded by punching her twice in the face.
During the proceedings, Kanhai struggled to provide his full address, stating only that he lived “with his sister,” until Richmond clarified that he resided in the same yard. This failure to clearly state his address contributed to the Magistrate’s decision to deny him bail.
Magistrate McGusty ordered a probation officer to prepare a report, considering the familial relationship between the parties involved. Richmond expressed a desire for her brother to receive rehabilitation; however, the Magistrate explained that such options could only be considered if Kanhai admitted to the offenses.
Throughout the hearing, Kanhai maintained his innocence, repeatedly stating “not guilty” as the charges were read. The matter has been adjourned to February 25, with Kanhai remaining in custody.
