Georgetown Public Hospital Enhances Access to Specialized Eye Care Through Surgical Partnership

News

The Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) is making strides in specialized eye care following a successful week-long surgical partnership held from February 9 to 13, 2026. This initiative brought together local and international retina specialists to address complex retinal conditions and introduce advanced surgical techniques within the hospital.

Led by Dr. Arlene Bobb-Semple, a local ophthalmologist with specialized training in vitreoretinal surgery, the collaboration also featured U.S. retina specialist Dr. Krishi Peddada, who participated as part of the World Eye Mission. The primary goal was to identify and surgically treat challenging retinal cases while providing hands-on mentorship for local surgical teams.

During the mission, a total of 11 complex retinal surgeries were performed, including two scleral buckle procedures—the first of their kind at GPHC. This represents a significant advancement in the hospital’s retinal surgical capabilities. Scleral buckle surgery is essential for repairing retinal detachment, either as a primary method or in conjunction with vitrectomy for complex cases.

Dr. Bobb-Semple is currently the only retina surgeon practicing in Guyana. Since joining GPHC in 2018, she has been instrumental in developing the hospital’s retinal services. Following the acquisition of vitrectomy equipment, she has been performing complex retinal surgeries locally since 2021. As there is no local ophthalmology subspecialty program, specialists like Dr. Bobb-Semple undergo extensive training abroad before returning to serve in Guyana. Her dedication to completing advanced training in vitreoretinal surgery has been crucial in making complex retinal surgeries accessible in the country.

Such visiting specialist missions provide opportunities for skill exchange and the introduction of advanced techniques, thereby reducing the necessity for overseas referrals and improving local access to critical eye care.

The overarching aim of these initiatives is to strengthen GPHC’s capacity, and by extension, Guyana’s ability to manage complex retinal diseases. With ongoing development, advanced procedures such as scleral buckle surgery could become routine for eligible patients.

The surgical team’s achievements underscore their commitment to advancing patient care and expanding specialized services within Guyana’s healthcare system. Through continued partnerships and local leadership, GPHC remains focused on improving access to advanced, sight-saving eye care.
