Guyana Times Reports | A tragic incident occurred on Sunday evening when Arvindo Mahaballi, a 43-year-old laborer and father of two, was struck and killed along Lusignan Public Road, East Coast Demerara, while reportedly on his way home for dinner.

The accident happened around 19:18h and involved a motor vehicle (PAK 2521) driven by a 28-year-old taxi driver from Buxton. Initial investigations indicated that the car was traveling west on the northern driving lane when it collided with Mahaballi, who was crossing the roadway at that moment.
Mahaballi sustained multiple injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by a doctor from the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC). His body was later moved to Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, pending a post-mortem examination.
Relatives of Mahaballi shared their grief, recounting that they were at home when they learned he was the victim of the accident. A family member explained that Mahaballi, who worked in carpentry and other odd jobs, had spent the day cleaning a drain on the other side of the village. He had not eaten and was reportedly on his way home for dinner.
Initial reports from the scene suggested it may have been a hit-and-run, as the driver allegedly fled. However, a side mirror that fell off during the collision allowed investigators to trace the vehicle’s registration number.
The family expressed their deep sorrow over Mahaballi’s sudden and devastating loss, noting concerns about speeding on East Coast roads, where motorists frequently drive at high speeds. They emphasized that without the fallen mirror, it might have been more challenging to identify the driver and are now calling for justice.
Mahaballi leaves behind two daughters, aged 17 and 12, who are struggling to cope with their father’s death. Family members shared that he was their primary provider, ensuring their daily needs were met, especially as they lived together following his separation from their mother. The children have reportedly been inconsolable since the tragedy.
Police indicated that a breathalyser test conducted on the driver showed readings of 0.032 per cent and 0.029 per cent blood alcohol concentration (BAC). The vehicle has been secured for examination, and the driver remains in custody as investigations continue.
The family is seeking justice for Arvindo Mahaballi during this painful time.
