“We track every week to see the cases that we have. I haven’t seen any significant increase in cases,” Dr. Anthony stated when asked about dengue occurrences in the country. He added that the Ministry continues its routine monitoring and treatment as part of their standard health protocol.

Dengue, as outlined by the World Health Organization (WHO), is a mosquito-borne viral infection prevalent in warm, tropical climates. Its symptoms can range from mild to severe, with some cases requiring hospitalization and, in extreme scenarios, leading to fatalities. While there is no direct treatment for dengue itself, symptomatic relief is available, such as managing fever and other related symptoms.

To combat the spread of dengue, Minister Anthony highlighted several preventative measures deployed nationwide, including routine fogging and the application of larvicides to reduce mosquito populations. He noted that targeting mosquitoes also aids in curbing the spread of other mosquito-borne illnesses, such as chikungunya.

Recently, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) issued an alert to governments to bolster surveillance and preparedness in response to an increase in chikungunya cases across the Americas. Dr. Anthony’s remarks indicate that Guyana is taking proactive steps to mitigate these health concerns and protect public well-being.
