Amanza Walton‑Desir of the Forward Guyana Movement says she has begun engaging authorities to secure immediate relief for families affected by recent demolitions in Friendship, East Bank Demerara, urging that responses be fair and humane.

In a message posted today, Walton‑Desir said she is focusing on support for single mothers, children and other vulnerable households displaced by the clearances. She warned that displacement “is not just administrative” but undermines the dignity, stability and wellbeing of families, and argued that enforcement actions must be paired with clear communication and practical assistance.

“We can enforce the law and still act with compassion. The two are not mutually exclusive,” she said, adding that she will remain actively engaged in seeking practical solutions and recommending urgent support measures for those affected.

Her intervention follows reports that court marshals and police, acting on a court order, dismantled structures on land claimed by a private company, prompting objections from residents who say they have occupied the area for more than 20 years. Residents have said they were given little notice and have appealed for help.

Walton‑Desir said she had taken note of concerns raised by the public and will press authorities to ensure those displaced receive timely assistance.
