Police in Regional Division 4 ‘B’ are investigating an alleged Robbery Under Arms that occurred on Thursday, March 19, 2026, at about 19:55 hrs at Providence Public Road near the Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge, East Bank Demerara.
The incident involved two Chinese nationals from Eccles, East Bank Demerara, who were reportedly walking north along the eastern carriageway on the pavement toward their residence when they were approached by three identifiable men on a motorcycle.
Preliminary investigations suggest one of the pillion riders dismounted and approached one of the victims with a handgun. A scuffle reportedly followed, during which the suspect allegedly struck the victim on the head, causing injuries. The victim was then relieved of cash. At the same time, the other pillion rider allegedly dismounted and took two cellular phones and cash from the second victim.
A 23-year-old armed security officer in the area reportedly witnessed what was happening and fired a shot into the air. Police said the perpetrators then allegedly fired several rounds in his direction before fleeing south on the motorcycle along the East Bank Access Road.
Emergency Medical Technicians were summoned and one of the victims was escorted to the Diamond Regional Hospital for treatment. Police reported that there were no gunshot injuries.
Four 9mm spent shells were recovered at the scene and are being lodged pending examination. Investigations are ongoing.
