A 27-year-old miner, Mark Anthony Williams of Morashee Village, East Bank Essequibo, has died after he was struck in the head by a falling tree.

Police said the incident occurred on Tuesday at a gold mining camp at 13 Miles, Mango Landing, Upper Demerara River. An investigation has been launched into the fatal accident.
According to police, Williams was working in a mining pit alongside colleagues when high winds and heavy rain began. It was during the weather conditions that a tree reportedly fell into the pit, causing injuries to Williams’ head.
Police said Williams’ body was retrieved from the pit. He was found to be unconscious and later discovered to be unresponsive. The body was taken out of the area and escorted to a mortuary for examination and official pronouncement as investigations continue.
