A senior teacher attached to the Alexander Village Nursery School is contemplating her next move after an early morning fire destroyed her Cummings Street, Georgetown home, while partially damaging a neighbouring building.

Sandra Sandy, 53, told News Source that she was at home with her niece, preparing for school, when neighbours raised the alarm. “I heard the neighbours saying, Sandra, fire! Fire! Fire! When I run to the back, I saw the fire in the roof of the second room. But we could not have gone in. So, I told my niece, see what you can grabble and run. We couldn’t out it at all,” she recalled.
The two were only able to save a few important documents. The fire reportedly started in Miss Sandy’s bedroom, though she could not identify the cause, noting that no electrical appliances had been left on. “I usually turn off the fan; before I come off the bed, I turned off the fan, that’s it. We ain’t had no iron, no nothing, nothing electrical was on,” she said.
The Guyana Fire Service responded and managed to extinguish the blaze, preventing it from spreading further. However, Miss Sandy said an earlier response could have saved more of her belongings. “To be truthful, if they could have come a little earlier, I could have saved a lot of things. They came fully loaded, I must say, fully loaded,” she noted.
Miss Sandy estimates her losses to be in the millions. Her niece, who is currently building her own home, had also stored a number of newly purchased household items at the premises — all of which were destroyed. The side of the neighbouring Julian’s Guest House and Restaurant was partially damaged by the fire.
Miss Sandy lived at the premises for over 20 years. Anyone wishing to offer assistance may contact her at 660-0440. The Guyana Fire Service is investigating the cause of the fire.
