In a statement, the Chamber said the matter should be handled through direct dialogue and constructive engagement, stressing that it could affect bilateral relations and cross-border trade.

SGCC, which advocates for trade and private sector cooperation between the two countries, warned that disputes of this nature go beyond diplomacy and may impact businesses and communities that rely on stable commercial activity across the border.

The Chamber noted that operators and residents dependent on predictable cross-border trade could face uncertainty if the issue continues for an extended period.

Pointing to the long-standing relationship between the neighbours, SGCC said differences should be resolved with mutual respect and open communication.

“Suriname and Guyana share a long history of neighbourly relations, growing economic ties, and a common interest in advancing regional cooperation,” the Chamber said.

It further emphasised the need for clarity and consistency in cross-border regulations, warning that uncertainty could disrupt business operations and undermine investor confidence.

“For businesses to operate effectively, there must be clarity, consistency, and confidence in the framework governing cross-border trade and transport,” SGCC stated.

SGCC said it remains optimistic the matter can be resolved quickly and amicably, reflecting the strength of ties between the two countries, and expressed confidence that the same spirit of cooperation will guide efforts to settle the dispute.
