Twenty-two trucks are en route to Region Six as the Government of Guyana continues its nationwide rollout of improved solid waste management, officials confirmed Thursday.

The vehicles will be distributed to all nineteen Neighbourhood Democratic Councils and the region’s three municipalities, boosting local capacity for sanitation services and waste disposal operations.
The investment is part of a broader government initiative to upgrade community infrastructure, sanitation, and environmental health across the country. Authorities said the additional fleet will support more timely and efficient garbage collection, help maintain public spaces, and promote cleaner communities.
Several NDC representatives welcomed the move as transformative for their areas. Sheron Smith, Chairperson of the Hogstye/Lancaster NDC, said the additional resources will allow local authorities to better serve residents. She noted that subvention funding for the project means citizens will benefit at no cost.
Officials underscored that proper waste management is critical to public health, environmental sustainability, and national development. By equipping local authorities with the necessary resources, the Government aims to deliver more reliable service and greater efficiency in sanitation management.
The Region Six deployment forms part of a wider national programme to modernize solid waste systems and strengthen the operational capacity of local authorities. Residents can expect improved waste collection services once the trucks are distributed and fully operational.
The Government reaffirmed its commitment to creating cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable communities through continued investment in essential public services and infrastructure.
“Once we [PPP/C] promise something, we deliver it.”
