A 53-year-old man lost his life on Friday night after being struck by a motor lorry while lying on the surface of the Fyrish public road.

Mark Songster of Lot 6 Section ‘C’ Fyrish Road, Corentyne, Berbice, was struck by motor lorry GYY 5720, driven by a 43-year-old male resident of Black Bush Polder, Corentyne, Berbice. According to reports, the lorry was travelling westward along the southern drive lane of Fyrish Road at a normal speed when it struck Songster, who was lying in the driving lane.
Bystanders rushed to assist the injured man, who was transported to the Port Mourant Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. His body has since been transferred to Ramoo Funeral Home, where it awaits a post-mortem examination.
The driver and vehicle were taken to the Albion Police Station following the incident. The vehicle was detained for inspection by a Licensing and Certifying Officer, and the driver was placed in custody to assist with ongoing inquiries. A breathalyser test administered to the driver returned two readings indicating a blood alcohol content of 11 micrograms per breath.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
