A 37-year-old welder from Rosignol, West Bank Berbice, was on Monday convicted by a jury of sexually penetrating a 12-year-old girl in a case that dates back to April 2020.

Robert Campbell appeared before Justice Simone Morris-Ramlall at the Berbice High Court, where he had maintained a not guilty plea throughout the proceedings. The charge alleged that on April 30, 2020, Campbell engaged in a sexual act with the minor in Berbice.
During the trial, state Prosecutor Marisa Edwards called eight witnesses to the stand, including a police officer and a medical expert, whose testimonies formed a central part of the prosecution’s case. Upon conclusion of the trial, the 12-member jury deliberated and returned a guilty verdict against Campbell.
Following the conviction, Campbell’s bail was immediately revoked and he was taken into custody. A sentencing hearing has been scheduled for May 6, during which the court will review several key documents, including a probation report, a victim impact statement, and a psychiatric evaluation.
Campbell is represented by Attorney-at-Law Samantha Brown.
