Serious crimes include offences such as murder, armed robbery, rape, and drug trafficking.

Walrond attributed the significant reduction to a combination of increased police presence, enhanced operational resources, and the integration of modern technology within the force.

She explained that the addition of vehicles to the Police Force has been a key factor in improving response times and deterring criminal activity.

“With more vehicles and better mobility, police are able to reach areas in a fraction of the time they previously required. This acts as a strong deterrent to criminal activity,” she said.

The Minister also highlighted the roll-out of body cameras and the implementation of the Safe City and Safe Country programmes as measures that have meaningfully improved transparency and accountability in policing across the region.

Walrond further pointed to advances in surveillance technology, noting that facial recognition capabilities are now being deployed to identify suspects more efficiently and reduce the time needed to bring cases to resolution.

“We now have cameras that can detect and identify suspects using facial recognition, which reduces trial time and allows us to solve crimes faster. This contributes to our high clear-up rate,” she said.

The commissioning of the new Anna Regina Police Station was itself highlighted as part of the broader effort to strengthen law enforcement infrastructure and capacity across the Essequibo Coast.
