The search for a young couple swept away by strong currents while swimming at Unity Beach, East Coast Demerara, entered a new phase Monday as police and military personnel intensified efforts to locate them.

The missing have been identified as Lyodisa Waldron, called “Loyda,” 20, and her fiancé Andri Francis, called “Bobby,” 31, both residents of Victoria Village, East Coast Demerara. Waldron was pregnant at the time of the incident.
The pair were among a group at the beach on Sunday afternoon when Waldron reportedly drifted further out into the Atlantic Ocean and called for help. Francis went to her aid, but both were overtaken by strong currents and disappeared beneath the water.
On Monday, a joint search team comprising ranks from the Mahaica Police Station and members of the Guyana Defence Force Coast Guard conducted searches in the immediate area where the couple was last seen. Despite the operation, neither individual was located.
Police said ranks remain on the ground alongside relatives of the missing pair as efforts continue. Authorities indicated that additional searches will be carried out as the tide recedes, in hopes of improving visibility and access to key areas along the shoreline.
Investigations and search operations remain ongoing.
