Matthews, a resident of the Number 77 Housing Scheme, appeared before Magistrate Tuanna Hardy to answer to the charge of unlawfully assaulting Police Lance Corporal Odeal Cort. The incident allegedly occurred on June 1, 2026, at Number 79 Village. Matthews pleaded not guilty to the charge.

During the hearing, legal counsel for the victim, Vinay Punwa, stated that the off-duty officer was confronted by Matthews while leaving a supermarket with his wife. Punwa alleged that Matthews was armed with a baseball bat and struck the officer multiple times, causing physical and mental trauma. According to the prosecution, the victim continues to suffer from persistent migraines following the attack and is undergoing medical evaluation for injuries, including swelling to the left elbow and damage to his index finger.

Police Prosecutor Sergeant Shinel Mathieson informed the court that the two men were known to each other within the same community. The prosecution suggested the motive may be linked to previous traffic-related encounters, as the victim serves as a traffic officer and had reportedly stopped Matthews for violations on several occasions.

Defense attorney Ryan Crawford argued that the incident was a mutual physical altercation between the two parties, which was eventually broken up by bystanders. He maintained that Matthews is not a flight risk and requested the court grant reasonable bail.

However, the prosecution successfully argued for Matthews to be remanded, citing:

The use of a weapon (a baseball bat) during the assault.

The existence of video surveillance footage from the supermarket allegedly showing Matthews initiating the attack.

The suspect’s reported attempt to evade arrest following the incident.

Concerns regarding the personal safety of the officer.

Magistrate Hardy denied the bail application, and Matthews was remanded to prison. The matter has been adjourned to the Springlands Magistrate’s Court for June 9, 2026.
