New Global COVID Variant Prompts Local Authorities to Ramp Up Precautions

Guyana’s Health Minister, Dr. Frank Anthony, announced that local health authorities are on high alert in response to a new variant of COVID-19, designated as NB.1.8.1. Precautions are being implemented to protect the public from its spread.

Regional Health Officers (RHOs) have been instructed to ensure that adequate testing kits and isolation spaces are available at health facilities nationwide. Dr. Anthony emphasized the importance of preparedness in light of the new strain, which shares symptoms with previous variants, including fever, cough, and fatigue.

He stated, “That one [the NB.1.81] they’re seeing in other parts of the world, that you’re getting some hospitalisations… all RHOs are on alert to make sure we have enough test kits and so.”

In addition to testing and isolation measures, local health authorities are focused on ensuring that anyone requiring hospitalization can receive timely support. Dr. Anthony reassured the public that systems are being put in place to enhance testing capacity and response to the new variant.
