Rawle Toney Discusses Hopes for the Future of Sports in Guyana

In a recent episode of his Sports podcast “Hear Me Out,” sports analyst Rawle Toney shared his insights on the future of sports in Guyana, emphasizing both optimism and the need for continued effort.

Toney reflects on his discussions with the President of Guyana, noting how engaging in conversations about sports reveals a deep understanding of the subject. “You can’t bluff your way through it,” he stated, highlighting the importance of genuine involvement in sports discussions.

He expressed hope for the future of sports in the country, acknowledging the progress made but also emphasizing the significant amount of work still required. “There’s a lot to clean up,” he mentioned, citing historical challenges in securing government support for sports initiatives.

Toney pointed out the importance of knowledgeable individuals in leadership positions, such as the Minister of Culture, Youth, and Sport, who understands the nuances of sports and engages in meaningful discussions about its development. He praised figures like Kashif and Shanghai, who have made significant contributions to football in Guyana.

Despite acknowledging the difficulties faced in the past, Toney believes that the current government is taking sports more seriously than before. He noted that approximately $21 billion has been invested in sports under the current administration, though he remains neutral on whether that investment has yielded visible results.

Toney emphasized the need for better communication regarding the advancements in sports, suggesting that a public relations strategy could help inform the community about ongoing developments and support for athletes.

He concluded with a cautious optimism, asserting that while progress is being made, the pace may seem slow. “We are seeing progress in sports,” he reassured listeners, “but there’s much more to be done to elevate the standards and opportunities for all athletes in Guyana.”
