Investigation Underway in Fatal Accident on Essequibo Coast

Police are investigating a fatal accident that occurred at approximately 21:25 hrs last night (Wednesday, June 4, 2025) on the Riverstown public road, Essequibo Coast, which claimed the life of 28-year-old Kevin Bacchus.

The accident involved three vehicles: motor lorry #GNN 4987, owned and driven by the now-deceased Kevin Bacchus from Queenstown, Essequibo Coast; motor lorry #GAJ 2185, owned and driven by 43-year-old Jairam Sukhu from Maria’s Lodge; and motor lorry (Trade Plate #BMI-2), driven by 28-year-old Yogeshwar Persaud from Columbia, Essequibo Coast.

Enquiries reveal that lorry #GAJ 2185 was traveling north in the western drive lane of the road while transporting an excavator, followed closely by lorry #BMI-2. Bacchus’ vehicle (#GNN 4987) was reportedly speeding in the opposite direction in a zig-zag manner.

Upon noticing Bacchus’ erratic driving, the driver of lorry #GAJ 2185 claimed he pulled to the left side of the road. Bacchus’ vehicle then collided with the right side of the excavator track on the low-bed trailer attached to lorry #GAJ 2185. Bacchus lost control of his vehicle, further colliding with the right-side rear portion of lorry #BMI-2.

Bacchus sustained severe injuries and was transported to the Suddie Public Hospital by bystanders, where he was pronounced dead on arrival at 21:36 hrs by Dr. Omar Moffett. The body has been transferred to the Suddie Public Hospital’s mortuary, awaiting a post-mortem examination.

Both drivers involved in the accident have been arrested and are currently in custody at the Suddie Police Station, assisting with the ongoing investigation.
