A heartbreaking situation. Sheniza Sampson shares her sister’s (Shinnell Williams) ongoing battle with liver cirrhosis, a condition that has dramatically impacted their lives. Diagnosed in May 2023, her sister faced numerous challenges in receiving timely medical care and support.

Initially admitted to the hospital for ten days, her sister was discharged with the instruction to join the gastroenterology clinic. However, due to the clinic being full, she was unable to enroll for an entire year. During this time, she made frequent trips to the hospital as her health deteriorated.
After finally joining the clinic, further tests revealed that her liver was failing, and a transplant was necessary. Unfortunately, such procedures are not available in Guyana, requiring significant financial resources for travel and treatment abroad. Despite her sister’s attempts to seek assistance from the government, there has been no response regarding potential coverage for these overwhelming costs.
Sheniza recounted the frustration experienced by her family, particularly when seeking urgent medical information. “My mom went to the hospital, but they said she has to see the doctor at the clinic, and when she got there, the doctor was on leave,” she explained. This lack of communication and urgency contributed to her sister’s worsening condition.
In May, her sister suffered seizures and lost consciousness for 24 hours, resulting in a return to the emergency room where she has since fallen into a coma. At just 27 years old, her family is devastated by the situation, especially as medical professionals have indicated that there is little more they can do.
Sheniza’s sister lives in Plaisance with her husband and their two young sons, aged 7 and 4. The family is struggling not only with her health crisis but also with the emotional toll it takes on her children, who are now facing the uncertainty of their mother’s condition.
Sheniza emphasized the need for a support system within public healthcare, suggesting that initiatives like GoFundMe could provide critical assistance to those facing costly medical challenges. “It’s very sad that my sister is in this position,” she said, adding that her sister is not an alcoholic and attributes her condition to past health issues.
As the family navigates this difficult journey, they hope to raise awareness about the urgent need for accessible healthcare and support for individuals facing life-threatening conditions.
