‘I Saw People Dying in Front of My Eyes’

British Survivor Recounts Air India Horror in Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad, UK Edition – Friday, 13 June 2025

The Guardian Reports : A British national, Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, has vividly described his harrowing escape from the Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad, stating he witnessed people “dying in front of my eyes.” The tragic incident, which occurred on Thursday, involved a Boeing 787 Dreamliner crashing into a medical college, resulting in the deaths of 241 people onboard. Ramesh is the sole survivor of the crash. At least five medical students were also killed, and approximately 50 individuals on the ground were injured, with concerns that the number of casualties could rise.

Speaking from his hospital bed to DD News, the 40-year-old expressed profound disbelief at his survival. “I can’t believe how I came out of it alive,” Ramesh stated. He recounted the terrifying moments following takeoff: “When the flight took off, within five to 10 seconds, it felt like it was stuck in the air. Suddenly, the lights started flickering – green and white.” The aircraft, he explained, “wasn’t gaining altitude and was just gliding before it suddenly slammed into a building and exploded.”

Initially believing he was dead, Ramesh quickly realized he was still alive. He spotted an opening in the fuselage. “I managed to unbuckle myself, used my leg to push through that opening, and crawled out,” he detailed. “I saw people dying in front of my eyes – the air hostesses, and two people I saw near me… I walked out of the rubble.”

This crash marks one of the deadliest incidents involving British nationals and is the first involving a 787 Dreamliner. Among those reported dead are a British couple, Fiongal and Jamie Greenlaw-Meek, who operated a spiritual wellness center. The Gloucester Muslim Community group offered condolences for Akeel Nanabawa, his wife Hannaa, and their four-year-old daughter Sara, who are also believed to be victims. Raj Mishra, the mayor of Wellingborough, announced the deaths of “Raxa Modha, infant Rudra Modha, and Ms. K Mistri” from his constituency.

Investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing, with aviation experts proposing various theories, including engine failure, potentially due to a bird strike—similar to the “Miracle on the Hudson” incident in 2009. Another speculation suggests that the flaps on the aircraft’s wings may not have been set correctly for takeoff.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the crash site and met with Vishwash Kumar Ramesh in the hospital, as shown in video footage. Campbell Wilson, the chief executive of Air India, also visited the area but declined to answer questions from the media. The Foreign Office has advised British nationals requiring consular assistance or those concerned about family or friends to call 020 7008 5000.
