Minister of Education Priya Manickchand today fired back at social media commentator Mikhail Rodrigues, known as the “Guyanese Critic,” following his profanity-laden tirade against her stance on the remand of social media singer “Baby Skello” for a blasphemous libel charge.

On his talk show Monday morning, Rodrigues lashed out at Manickchand, hurling expletives and insults in her direction. His comments drew criticism from many viewers and across social media platforms.
In response, Manickchand described the “Guyanese Critic” as a bully and emphasized the need for people to stand up against such behavior.
“The Guyanese Critic tried to twist what I said—it’s his style. He is not a journalist; he is not credible. While I wouldn’t focus too much on him, I must say he is a bully, and there are many like him in households across this country. To the girls and women who have to deal with bullies like him, I urge you to defend yourselves and confront them,” she stated.
Manickchand urged citizens to be cautious of personalities like Rodrigues and not to tolerate his behavior. She characterized his attacks as ignorant, vulgar, and abusive.
“All of that constitutes a crime against the state under the Cybercrime legislation. If I were to file a complaint with the cybercrime unit, he would most likely face charges,” Manickchand explained.
The Minister noted that she approaches issues from a pragmatic perspective and asserted that individuals like Rodrigues should be isolated from public discourse. She expressed concern that if she pursued legal action and Rodrigues were granted bail, it would highlight inconsistencies in the application of the law.
Manickchand reiterated her views regarding the case of “Baby Skello,” stating that if the singer’s remand was deemed excessive, her comments about Rodrigues would remain the same.
Her remarks reflect ongoing discussions about accountability and the impact of social media on public dialogue in Guyana.
