Laured ‘The Lion’ Stewart Returns to the Ring for UBA Cruiserweight Title

After a 14-month hiatus, US-based Guyanese boxer Laured ‘The Lion’ Stewart is set to make his return to the ring, facing Mexican Carlos Valenzuela Gonzalez for the Universal Boxing Alliance (UBA) Cruiserweight title. The fight will be part of the undercard for the Brandon Quarles and Axel Vega match in Mexico.

In his brief career, Stewart has established a reputation for his knockout power, securing three of his four victories by stoppage. His only loss came against the unbeaten Jalen Renaud in the US. Stewart’s last fight was a knockout win against fellow Guyanese Imran Khan at the Everest ground in April 2024.

Gonzalez, on the other hand, has struggled recently, losing six of his last seven bouts, including five consecutive losses. His only victory came in his debut, alongside a draw.

For Stewart, this fight represents a pivotal opportunity to reignite his career and pursue his ultimate goal of becoming a world champion. “It’s a little difficult being in the army,” he said regarding his ambitions. “But I’m committed to that cause and I’m training hard. I’m getting out of the military next year and I’m going to give my last seven years wholeheartedly to boxing after that.”

Despite being out of competitive action for over a year, Stewart has maintained a rigorous training regimen, although he faced an injury that necessitated a break. Since his victory over Khan, several promoters have reached out, but fights did not materialize until now.

Stewart eagerly accepted the matchup with Gonzalez, stating, “I keep saying I’m going to be world champion, but if I can’t beat people like these with only a four-week call-up, I might as well stop boxing. We’re coming to turn Mexico on its head.”

He expressed confidence in his preparation, noting, “Training is going well. I’m sparring with guys way heavier than me, and they’re pushing me because this guy (Gonzalez) is coming down in weight for this fight. We’re committed, we’re dedicated, we’re focused, and I’m pushing myself. Once ‘The Lion’ starts to apply pressure, very few people can stand the test.”

As he looks to capitalize on any knockout opportunities, Stewart is determined to continue his journey toward becoming a world champion.
