Azruddin Mohamed, presidential candidate for the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party, has issued a strong statement condemning what he describes as a “state-sponsored political attack” by the PPP-led government. According to Mohamed, Guyanese taxpayers’ money is being used to fund a lobbying campaign in the United States aimed at smearing his reputation and linking him to the Nicolás Maduro regime in Venezuela.

Mohamed says newly revealed filings under the U.S. Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) show that Guyana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs hired U.S.-based lobbying firm Continental Strategy, paying them $50,000 per month, totaling over $300,000 USD. The firm allegedly disseminated false information to American lawmakers and public platforms, including statements describing Mohamed as a “pro-Maduro puppet” and a “threat to democracy.”
“Let me be absolutely clear: I reject Venezuela’s claim to the Essequibo,” Mohamed said in his statement. “My father is Essequibo-born. I would never betray the soil my family is rooted in. I stand firmly for Guyana’s sovereignty; I always have and always will.”
Mohamed characterized the campaign as a continuation of what he calls a troubling pattern by the current administration—weaponizing foreign policy and international platforms to silence political opponents. He accuses the government of:
Spreading misinformation about opposition figures
Misusing state media to attack citizens
Providing false information to foreign entities to target Guyanese individuals
The WIN candidate said the actions not only endanger his personal safety and that of his family but also represent an abuse of power and public funds.
He disclosed that he is currently consulting with legal counsel about pursuing civil and criminal action against the Government of Guyana for financing and disseminating “false and defamatory” claims through a foreign agent. He is also considering diplomatic avenues to raise awareness internationally.
In closing, Mohamed appealed to the Guyanese people to resist political intimidation and urged voters to make a change at the upcoming September 1st General and Regional Elections.
“If they can do this to me, they can do it to any one of us,” he warned. “Vote for a new government that defends its citizens—not attacks them. Vote WIN.”
The PPP has not yet responded to Mohamed’s claims.
