Althia King Resigns from A New and United Guyana (ANUG)

  • News

Althia King, the young woman selected by A New and United Guyana (ANUG) to occupy its seat in the National Assembly, has announced her resignation from the party. She made the announcement via a Facebook post on Wednesday evening, stating, “As of July 1st, I officially resigned from A New and United Guyana (ANUG).”

King noted that she had kept party leaders informed about her decisions and emphasized her need to prioritize “personal matters” and complete her studies. She did not enter Parliament due to a refusal from one of ANUG’s partners, The New Movement, to vacate the seat in accordance with an agreement involving the Liberty and Justice Party (LJP).

Her resignation follows closely behind the departures of ANUG co-founders Ralph Ramkarran and Timothy Jonas, who stepped down shortly after the announcement that ANUG would collaborate with Azruddin Mohamed’s ‘We Invest in Nationhood’ (WIN). Both Ramkarran and Jonas expressed their decisions on social media, with Ramkarran informing current party leader Dr. Mark France of his resignation.

King clarified that she was not part of the party executive and did not have a vote in the decision to collaborate with WIN. However, she expressed happiness about ANUG’s collaboration with third parties, which aligns with the party’s principles.

A signing ceremony between ANUG and WIN took place on Saturday, where Mohamed, who has been sanctioned by the US government, and Dr. Mark France formalized the agreement.

Previously, Mohamed had ruled out merging with other parties, asserting confidence in WIN’s ability to win elections independently.

ANUG’s situation reflects a broader trend, as both the Alliance for Change (AFC) and the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) have faced similar challenges, experiencing multiple resignations in recent months. Recently, five youth leaders, including three Members of Parliament from the AFC, resigned within a two-week span. Meanwhile, nearly ten senior members from the PNC-led APNU have either defected to the ruling PPP, joined the AFC, or formed new parties ahead of the September 1 General and Regional Elections.
