The Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) has issued a call to all political leaders participating in the upcoming 2025 General and Regional Elections to act responsibly and foster national harmony within Guyana’s diverse society.

The ERC expressed concern over recent media reports highlighting incidents that have heightened tensions among supporters of various political parties. In light of these developments, the Commission emphasizes the responsibility of political leaders to promote respect, restraint, and unity during the electoral process.
Key Recommendations from the ERC:
Denounce Violence: Political leaders are urged to reject all forms of violence, incitement, and intimidation, including threats or harassment at rallies and public engagements.
Encourage Peaceful Engagement: Leaders should consistently advise their supporters against acts of provocation or hostility toward others.
Use Respectful Language: The ERC calls for leaders to avoid language that could incite division or violence, particularly along ethnic or political lines.
The Commission firmly opposes any form of violence or intimidation throughout the election period, urging leaders to discourage threats or disruptions at political events and in public spaces. They emphasized that elections are a democratic right and should occur in an atmosphere of peace and mutual respect.
The ERC plans to hold a Code of Conduct signing ceremony following Nomination Day, where all political parties contesting the elections will commit to upholding the values outlined by the Commission. This initiative aims to ensure a safe, inclusive, and respectful electoral process for all Guyanese.
In previous elections, all parties signed the ERC Code of Conduct, which was designed to maintain electoral peace. The ERC hopes to see similar commitment in the upcoming elections to promote unity and harmony across the nation.
