Political Parties Gear Up for Nomination Day at Umana Yana

As the September elections approach, several political parties have begun camping out at the Umana Yana in preparation for the Nomination Day process scheduled for Monday. On this day, parties must submit their lists of candidates along with the required signatures from nominators.

The Alliance for Change (AFC) and the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) are among the first to arrive. APNU Member Robin Gilgeous emphasized the importance of being early in line to ensure their nomination documents are submitted promptly. “We believe if our agents have been working hard and putting the people first, then we should be here first,” he stated.

The APNU launched its campaign last Sunday and expressed confidence in winning the upcoming elections. Gilgeous noted that each party must submit multiple lists that cannot share signatures, highlighting the need for meticulous preparation.

AFC representative Joel Danrade also stressed the significance of their early presence. “We are here to secure that spot,” he said, responding to claims from the PPP about being present earlier.

While the PPP was absent from the scene during a visit by News Source, some first-time parties were securing their positions. Jan Fortune from the Assembly for Liberty and Prosperity (ALP) shared their readiness, stating, “We are number three, and if anyone lapses, we can go to number two or number one.”

The Forward Guyana Movement, which unites three new political parties, expressed enthusiasm about the electoral process. Party representative Malika Ramsey remarked on the motivation among smaller parties, stating, “It shows that everybody wants to be involved.”

The Guyana Elections Commission has approved symbols for a total of 21 political parties for the upcoming polls, signaling a competitive electoral landscape.
