AFC Warns of Potential Chaos on Nomination Day

The Alliance For Change (AFC) is raising concerns that Nomination Day could lead to chaos and confusion if the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) does not clearly outline the procedures for presenting the Lists of Candidates. This presentation is scheduled for Monday at the Umana Yana between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM.

At a press conference, AFC Leader Nigel Hughes expressed frustration over GECOM’s lack of communication, stating that aside from the time and location, no additional information has been provided. He mentioned that a letter from the AFC seeking clarification has gone unanswered.

“If GECOM does not establish and publish what the procedures are, then the assumption is the person who gets there first is the one who will be registered as the first political party to hand in the List of Candidates. This creates a significant problem, as a lack of clear procedures could lead to a chaotic rush, similar to what occurred in previous elections,” Hughes warned.

Hughes highlighted the concerns surrounding crowd control, noting that representatives from various political parties have begun camping out at Umana Yana. The AFC has stated it is second in line, following the APNU.

“Imagine thousands of supporters present in the morning, with the APNU and PPP’s contingents literally next to each other. Without a clear procedure, there is a risk of a mad rush towards the Umana Yana. While the police have set up barricades, if those are breached in the absence of a procedure, it could lead to chaos,” he said.

Additionally, Hughes noted that representatives from the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) are already claiming they are second in line, further complicating the situation.

He urged GECOM to publish the procedures well in advance of the event to ensure a smooth process, emphasizing that over 20 parties are vying to contest the elections in September.
