Rickford Burke Criticizes Freddie Kissoon Over Election Predictions and Racial Commentary

  • News

Political commentator and Guyanese activist Rickford Burke has launched a scathing critique of newspaper columnist Freddie Kissoon, accusing him of promoting racially divisive narratives and biased political predictions ahead of the next national elections.

In a Facebook post published this week, Burke claimed that Kissoon’s recent writings reflect an entrenched bias against African Guyanese political figures, including current Opposition Leader Aubrey Norton. Burke alleged that Kissoon predicted the failure of all African Guyanese presidential candidates while portraying businessman Azruddin Mohamed and the ruling People’s Progressive Party (PPP) in an overwhelmingly favorable light.

“Essentially, he is promoting East Indian supremacy,” Burke wrote, urging the public to reject what he described as “race-baiting” tactics. He expressed concern over what he sees as a dangerous trend of racial polarization in political commentary and warned against attempts to marginalize leaders from Guyana’s Afro-Guyanese community.

Burke further referenced a 2022 prediction Kissoon allegedly made regarding New York Attorney General Letitia James, where Kissoon supposedly claimed PPP supporters in Queens would vote against her due to her comments about racism in Guyana. Burke described that prediction as inaccurate and racially motivated, highlighting that James went on to win re-election by a significant margin.

He accused Kissoon of consistently misrepresenting political realities due to personal and racial biases, and claimed that the columnist has “lost credibility” among the Guyanese public.

Burke’s remarks come amid growing political tensions in Guyana, with increasing scrutiny on racial narratives, media influence, and the upcoming elections. His statements reflect ongoing concerns among sections of the diaspora and opposition supporters about ethnic divisions in the country’s political landscape.

Neither Freddie Kissoon nor representatives of the PPP have publicly responded to Burke’s latest comments.
