GECOM Addresses Candidate List Concerns Ahead of Elections

  • News

The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has confirmed that the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) and the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) are the only major political parties that have not been notified of any issues regarding their submitted candidate lists for the upcoming elections. The APNU was the first to submit its list on Nomination Day, closely followed by the governing PPP.

In contrast, the five other parties that submitted their candidate lists have received notifications from GECOM about various deficiencies. Officials from at least three of these parties have reported that the issues are considered minor, primarily relating to details about nominees and nominators, such as updated addresses for those who have relocated. Additionally, some parties were informed that they need to include extra candidates for specific regions.

GECOM has stipulated that parties must submit corrected lists by tomorrow, with final approvals expected by Friday. Of the seven parties participating in the elections, four—APNU, PPP, the Alliance for Change, and the We Invest in Nationhood party—plan to contest in all ten regions. Meanwhile, the Forward Guyana Movement aims to compete in seven regions, and the Assembly of Liberty and Prosperity will contest in six.

Political parties must also inform GECOM by July 21 if they intend to participate in a Joinder list, allowing them to contest separately while combining their total votes after the elections. As the election date approaches, the coordination and compliance of candidate lists will be crucial for all participating parties.
