The Guyana Defence Force Coast Guard swiftly responded to a distress call early this morning regarding the tug Captain Chad Michael and its attached barge, which were reported sinking mid-channel in the Demerara Harbour approach.

Upon their arrival, Coast Guard personnel observed that the bow of the barge was submerged, while the crew was actively working to pump out water. In response, the Coast Guard deployed additional pumps to assist in stabilizing the situation.
The barge, which was transporting a cargo of molasses, had developed a breach in its side, allowing water to enter and partially submerge the vessel. Thanks to the combined efforts of the Coast Guard and the crew, the barge was successfully stabilized and safely towed to the Molasses Wharf at Kingston.
Relevant maritime authorities, including the Maritime Administration Department (MARAD), have been informed and are currently monitoring the situation. The Guyana Defence Force Coast Guard reiterates its commitment to ensuring the safety of all vessels operating within Guyana’s territorial waters and commends the responding officers for their swift and professional actions.
