Hgp Nightly News Reports : Speaking at a well-attended APNU rally, retired Deputy Police Commissioner Dr. Paul Williams expressed his concerns over the current police leadership, stating, “They side-stepped me for the office of commissioner of police because they know I would not have been a candidate for corruption and bribery.”

Dr. Williams, who was promoted to Deputy Commissioner of Police in 2018 by former President David Granger, highlighted his extensive experience of over 30 years in the Guyana Police Force, including roles as Crime Chief and Acting Commissioner of Police. He noted that he was among the nominees interviewed for the Commissioner position but ultimately not selected.
Reflecting on his departure from the force, he mentioned that in August 2020, he was placed on 192 days of annual leave. “The Guyana Police Force still has good people, but they are not being put in positions where they can serve you,” he said, criticizing the appointment of individuals who, he claimed, act on political instructions and violate citizens’ constitutional rights.
“We have to stop this come September 1,” Dr. Williams urged, calling for change in the upcoming elections to ensure that qualified individuals are placed in leadership roles within the police force. His remarks resonated with attendees, many of whom share similar concerns about police integrity and accountability.
