News Source Guyana Reports : The family of 26-year-old Jenel Pollydore, a teacher from Linden who was tragically murdered by her ex-boyfriend, is expressing deep frustration with the Guyana Police Force. They believe the police failed to protect Pollydore despite her repeated complaints about threats from her ex, Shaka Phillips, 21, even after she obtained a restraining order against him.

Phillips has admitted to the murder, telling investigators that he shot Pollydore twice outside a wedding reception at a Linden hotel after an argument over her refusal to answer his calls. According to the police, he pulled a gun from a bag, shot her once, and then chased her as she sought refuge in the hotel compound, shooting her again.
After the incident, Phillips allegedly disposed of the firearm near a boat landing in the Demerara River. He is expected to appear in court as early as Tuesday or Wednesday to face murder charges.
Pollydore’s relatives have voiced their concerns to rights activist and ALP Leader, Simona Broomes, stating that the police did not take adequate measures to protect her. They reported that even after securing a restraining order, Phillips continued to visit her home and make threats. When Pollydore sought help from the police regarding this harassment, her family claimed she was questioned about her appearance and the reasons for their breakup, rather than receiving the protection she needed.
The couple shared a 4-month-old child and had lived together briefly, but Pollydore ended the relationship due to Phillips’s abusive behavior. Her family noted that she frequently expressed her fears to the police, yet no action was taken against him prior to her murder.
A post-mortem examination is scheduled for Pollydore, and the police have confirmed that two 9mm spent shells were recovered from the scene. The family continues to seek justice and accountability for the tragic loss of their loved one.
