President Irfaan Ali addressed party supporters at a rally on Sunday, aiming to rally support for his government amid rising concerns about the cost of living. Speaking from the west side of the Demerara River, he emphasized his administration’s efforts to mitigate the impact of global price increases while pledging to do more in a potential second term.

Despite acknowledging that the government cannot control global market prices, President Ali outlined a vision for enhanced food security, including a significant investment in local dairy production. He stated, “We are going to invest in every form of food security so that we don’t have imported price inflation on food and food products.”
The President highlighted recent initiatives aimed at alleviating the cost burden on citizens, such as removing taxes on fuel imports and increasing electricity subsidies. He also mentioned a 5% reduction in water charges, asserting that these measures are part of a broader strategy to address cost-of-living concerns.
Ali announced plans for a new fertilizer plant to ensure consistent supply and pricing for farmers, aiming to lower food prices. He also referenced the opening of new hospitals and the introduction of health vouchers to reduce health-related expenses for families.
In his vision for the next five years, President Ali emphasized investments in productivity and job creation, pledging support for entrepreneurs through a development bank to facilitate easier access to financing.
Despite the challenges his party faces in securing support from Linden, traditionally a stronghold for the People’s National Congress (PNC), President Ali urged voters to recognize the benefits provided by the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), stating, “The PPP is the one who has already given us and will guarantee more and more.”
As the upcoming elections approach, the President expressed a desire for an overwhelming parliamentary majority to advance his administration’s plans and strategies for economic empowerment in Linden and beyond.
