Forde Criticizes Mass Promotions in Police Force as Political Stunt

News

Kaieteur News Reports : Former Member of Parliament and Shadow Attorney General, Roysdale Forde, has condemned the government’s recent mass promotion of over 2,000 police officers within the Guyana Police Force (GPF), calling it a politically motivated maneuver aimed at swaying voters and improving the image of a “badly tarnished administration.”

The promotions, ordered by President Irfaan Ali and announced on Wednesday, took effect on August 1. Many of the promoted ranks had reportedly been overlooked for decades. The President stated that promotions would be granted to officers with the requisite years of service and no disciplinary actions, allowing for advancements from constable to lance corporal, corporal to sergeant, and sergeant to inspector.

In a column published in the Village Voice, Forde described the government’s actions as a “grotesque political ploy” rather than a genuine celebration of service. He emphasized that promotions should be based on merit and professionalism, rather than used as a tool for electioneering. “Instead of honouring these officers with the dignity of a transparent, merit-based process, the PPP/C has hijacked their moment of triumph,” he stated.

Forde highlighted the difficult working conditions faced by many police officers, who have served with dedication while enduring systemic neglect. He criticized the government’s timing, suggesting that it reflects a pattern of political maneuvering as elections approach. “This same administration miraculously discovers a newfound passion for the welfare of our police force? This is not about justice or service. It is about votes,” he asserted.

He further lamented the use of police officers as political props, questioning the government’s sincerity in recognizing their contributions. “The promoted officers deserve better than to be reduced to props in Ali’s electoral theatre,” Forde stated.

The recent promotions come amidst public scrutiny of the GPF, particularly following the handling of the investigation into the death of 11-year-old Adriana Younge. During this period, the government distanced itself from the police force, with Attorney General Mohabir Nandlall asserting that the GPF operates independently and is not under direct government control.

Nandlall emphasized that the promotion process is managed through an independent body, the Police Service Commission, and that the government should not be held accountable for the actions of the police.

As the political landscape shifts ahead of upcoming elections, Forde’s criticisms underscore the ongoing tensions between the government and law enforcement, as well as the challenges facing the GPF in maintaining public trust.
