Driver Charged in Fatal Accident of Corentyne Teenager

Nine months after the tragic death of 18-year-old Jainarine Rampersaud, the man allegedly responsible for the motor vehicle accident has been charged. Shakir Batson, 25, from Rose Hall Town, Corentyne, Berbice, faced the court today for causing Rampersaud’s death on October 27, 2024.

Rampersaud, who was riding a motorcycle with 15-year-old Stephon Verrapen as a pillion rider, was allegedly struck by Batson’s car in Hampshire, Corentyne, Region Six. Following the collision, both teenagers were initially taken to Port Mourant Hospital and later transferred to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital. Rampersaud was subsequently moved to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), where he succumbed to his injuries 12 days later.

In court before Magistrate Michelle Mathias at the Albion Magistrates’ Court, Batson pleaded not guilty to the charge and was granted bail set at $800,000. The case has been adjourned until July 15.

Reports indicate that Batson claimed he was driving along the Corentyne Highway when the motorcycle, CN 9498, struck his car from behind, damaging the rear lights. He stated that the motorcyclists did not stop, prompting him to chase after them.

However, Rampersaud, from his hospital bed, contested this account, noting that the rear of the car showed no signs of damage. He asserted that it was the front of the car that had impacted the motorcycle.

Rampersaud’s mother has been vocal in her calls for justice for her son, emphasizing the need for accountability in this tragic incident.
