People often treat street corners as dump sites

Government Launches Nationwide Cleanup Initiative

The government has initiated its tenth nationwide cleanup campaign, led by President Irfaan Ali, aimed at addressing the pervasive issue of waste management across the country. The National Enhancement Committee, a cross-agency body comprising various ministries and organizations, has been diligently planning and executing this initiative, which mobilizes machinery and resources from both public and private sectors.

In a recent statement, Hon. Deodat Indar, Minister and MP emphasized the complexity of organizing such a large-scale operation. “Mobilizing machines, equipment, and materials is no easy task,” he noted, underscoring the extensive planning that goes into the effort. He expressed gratitude towards private sector partners who have consistently provided the necessary machinery and support.

The campaign targets the rampant littering and improper waste disposal that have become commonplace in urban areas. “People often treat street corners as dump sites,” Hon. Deodat Indar, Minister and MP said. “We cannot continue to live like this. It’s our duty as citizens to keep our environment clean.”

Highlighting the unpatriotic nature of neglecting waste management, he pointed out the common practice among businesses of hiring individuals to dispose of garbage, often leading to more litter on the streets. “This has to stop,” he declared, calling for a collective effort to change societal attitudes toward waste disposal.

The representative noted that industrial garbage is a significant contributor to the problem. “We see it piled up, affecting local businesses and the community’s health,” he said. “If you’re making a living in a particular area, keeping it clean should be a priority.”

The cleanup initiative aims to instill a sense of responsibility among citizens, urging them to actively participate in maintaining a clean environment. “We have to change as a country,” he concluded, emphasizing the need for a collective commitment to a cleaner and healthier Guyana.

As the campaign unfolds, the government is hopeful that these efforts will lead to lasting improvements in the nation’s waste management practices, fostering a culture of cleanliness and responsibility among all citizens.
