Savitree Mahase, a 25-year-old graduate registered nurse from the village of Wales, shared her inspiring journey during a recent graduation ceremony, emphasizing the importance of perseverance and education.

“Everybody has a story — and this is mine,” Mahase began, recounting her challenging upbringing in a household with eight siblings, where survival often took precedence over education. It wasn’t until she was eight that a kind woman took her in and taught her the basics of reading and writing.
Despite her initial setbacks, including being placed in a less-than-ideal school, Mahase held onto her dream of uplifting her mother’s life through education. Life, however, led her to an orphanage for three years where she battled anger and rebellion, leading to suspensions and struggles with her studies.
A turning point came when she moved to Linden and met her head teacher, Miss Craig. “Her discipline shaped me,” Mahase reflected. With renewed determination, she excelled in her CXC exams, placing second in her class.
After moving to Georgetown to work, Mahase continued to pursue her dream of becoming a nurse. However, she faced another significant challenge — a three-year struggle in a domestic violence relationship. “Imagine studying to save lives while fighting to save my own,” she shared, describing it as one of the darkest chapters of her life.
Despite the odds, Mahase’s resilience paid off. Today, she proudly stands as a registered nurse, a testament to her unwavering faith and determination. “My journey proves that no matter where you start, with resilience, you can rise above it all,” she concluded, inspiring many with her story of hope and triumph.
