Two men from the North West District appeared before His Worship Mr. Clive Nurse at the Mabaruma Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday after being charged with drink driving and related traffic offences.

In the first matter, Kennard Smith of Khan Hill, North West District, pleaded guilty to driving a motor vehicle while his breath alcohol level exceeded the prescribed limit. He was fined $200,000 or, in default, sentenced to three weeks’ imprisonment.
Smith was also charged and convicted on five additional traffic offences. He was fined $30,000 for driving without a licence, $50,000 for dangerous driving, $50,000 for failing to carry an identification mark at the rear of his vehicle, $50,000 for failing to carry an identification mark at the front, and $20,000 for failing to comply with a police direction. His total fines amounted to $400,000.
In the second matter, Damian Williams of Wauna Scheme, North West District, also pleaded guilty to driving a motor vehicle while his breath alcohol level exceeded the prescribed limit. He was likewise fined $200,000, with a default sentence of three weeks’ imprisonment.
Both defendants were charged by Corporal 24189 Roopram.
