The three opposition-nominated Elections Commissioners have consented to meet with the Leader of the Opposition, Azruddin Mohamed, under the condition that their removal from the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) will not be part of the discussion.

Initially, Mohamed had hoped to convene with Commissioners Vincent Alexander, Charles Corbin, and Desmond Trotman at the WIN party headquarters on Sunday. However, the Commissioners declined the invitation, indicating a preference for a neutral meeting venue.

In a letter dated Saturday, January 31, 2026, the Commissioners asserted that there was no basis for a meeting regarding their status on the Commission, especially in light of the public calls for their resignation from the WIN party.

The letter emphasized their awareness of WIN’s public statements regarding their positions, stating, “We do not accept that there is any basis for a meeting to discuss our status as Commissioners.”

Despite this, Alexander, Corbin, and Trotman expressed willingness to engage with Mohamed in his official capacity to discuss other matters relating to GECOM, but reiterated that their status was non-negotiable without legislative or judicial intervention. “Recognizing your status as Leader of the Opposition, we are happy to meet with you or your representatives on all matters pertaining to GECOM, other than our status,” the Commissioners wrote.

The Leader of the Opposition had extended the meeting invitation one day after his discussion with GECOM Chair, Justice (Ret’d) Claudette Singh, who acknowledged that she lacks the authority to remove the three Commissioners nominated by the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) and later the A Partnership for National Unity + Alliance For Change (APNU+AFC).

It has been noted that at least one of the current Opposition-nominated Commissioners suggested that if they are to resign, the Chairman should also step down, as the same nomination process that applied to them also applied to her.

The ongoing discussions and disagreements over the status of the Elections Commissioners reflect the heightened political tensions surrounding the electoral process in Guyana, with the opposition pushing for changes within the Commission amidst claims of inadequate representation.
